Changing Lives Through Dentistry and Sports

TeamSmile is the nation’s premier advocacy group connecting oral health professionals with professional sports teams to provide life-changing dental care to children who might not otherwise have access. But this isn’t your typical dental clinic.

Imagine walking into a stadium instead of a dental office. You’re greeted by players, cheerleaders, mascots, face painters, and music. The atmosphere is electric. And in the middle of it all, children are receiving the dental care they need completely free of charge.

That’s the magic of TeamSmile. They take the fear out of dentistry and make it fun.

 The Impact Is Real

Since launching in 2007, TeamSmile has:

• Hosted over 325 programs
• Served more than 60,000 children
• Delivered over $23 million in free dental care and oral health education

Each event serves about 250 kids and brings together 125–175 volunteers—including dentists, hygienists, and community members—to provide between $75,000 and $125,000 in vital care.

A Tragedy That Sparked a Movement

TeamSmile was born out of heartbreak. In 2007, a national news story reported the death of a young boy who died from an untreated tooth infection—an entirely preventable tragedy caused by a lack of access to dental care.

Dr. Bill Busch, a Kansas City dentist, was moved to action. With the help of the Kansas City Chiefs, the very first TeamSmile event took place later that year. It was the beginning of a movement that’s still growing strong today.
